A sound mind, they say, lives in a sound body. It is out of this belief that “the school” has always encouraged active participation of students in activities that promote healthy bodies, especially in sports. It was thus a great inconvenience when the basketball court was demolished to give way to a training pitch, in preparation for the Cup of African nation’s tournament, which took place in Ghana in February 2008.
A year later and government’s pledge to reconstruct the court after the tournament had and not been honoured. The boys are becoming bored and restless, with no outlet for all their youthful energy. Many argued that there were alternative sports for which more than adequate facilities were in place, but every Owarean knows that our activities are never complete without basketball. After all, we are the regional champions and looking forward to the national tournament which comes off July,2009. This coupled with the general appreciation for the fair and grace of the game gave birth to a need; a need to construct a new court and to do it fast. As if by design, August 2008, arrives and the newly appointed senior prefect is a devout basketball player himself. He immediately starts looking for ways to materialize this desire that lies on every Owareans heart. After lengthy discussions, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Akrasi, with the support of the rest of his family, agree to fund the construction of a new basketball court. It appears prayers have been answered.
Consar construction limited was employed to work on this project. That begins the three month agonizing wait. Construction was detailed and meticulous, hence slow. But we had waited almost a year, another three months wouldn’t hurt.
Finally, in Feburary 2009, the new court was completed. Solid concrete, designed according to international specifications, with two standard spring back rims suspended on two majestic poles at opposite ends of the court. It is truly a sight to behold. To commemorate the inauguration of the court, a friendly match was organized between OWASS and Toase Seniour High School (TOSS). The atmosphere was electrifying as TOSS was looking for revenge for earlier defeat conceded against “the school” and OWASS sought to grant their many fans an auspicious beginning on their home court. TOSS battled tooth a nail but could not hold back the nimble footed Owareans who weaved through the defence and carried the day. We hope our fortunes do not change in any subsequent encounters.
We are deeply grateful to Mr. and Mrs. Akrasi for their most generous donation to us. They will forever be in our prayers. We are to draw meaning from all these events. That what ever you can conceive and believe you can achieve. Secondly, as Larry Bird, the legendary basketball player, so rightly puts it, “ your will only ever be as good as your practice.” Work hard at your talent and in your own time you will shine. |
